Dear Parents:

WELCOME to the 2020-2021 school year and third grade! My name is Emily Iwata and I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to work with you and your children this year. Though this year will be unique, I am so excited for the start of a new school year. As we head into 3rd grade and distance learning, I’d like to thank you ahead of time for your active interest in your child’s education and assure you that we are in this together. I hope you all enjoyed your summer and are ready for a great 3rd grade year!

This is my 19th year teaching in the district, though this will be my first year teaching in a distance learning model! I received both my credential and my Masters in Interdisciplinary Education (emphasis in Reading) at Santa Clara University. While there, I also completed my coursework for a 2nd credential as a CA certified Reading Language Arts Specialist for grades K-12.

An important part of my class this year will be to work with families to create routines and expectations for the students to be successful in a distance learning model. One key component of this will be that the students have a space at home to learn, free of distraction, particularly during online instruction. Although maintaining a structured classroom will look much different online, I ask that you please review the guidelines and expectations of students during online instruction. Students will also be learning that organization and giving your best are essential to being a successful student in my class. This is difficult for most third graders at the beginning of the school year, so I ask for your support in helping them maintain an organized work space with the school supplies that have been provided. To engage the students in online learning, I will be asking for a great deal of participation and setting clear expectations and norms for our third graders at the start of this school year. Despite not being able to instruct the students in person this year, I still feel strongly that third grade is a very important year for the children; it is as much academic preparation for a higher level of learning, as it is a time of approaching various developmental and social changes as well. My personal philosophy of education is that teaching is not only about effectively conveying subject matter and the desire to learn, but about guiding maturing young adolescents along the way. My goal for the year is to build an open and positive learning environment that will enable us to foster well-rounded proactive students.

As we move forward with distance learning, please do take the time to read through the following pages on my site:

  • Weekly Schedule

  • Student/Parent Zoom and Distance Learning Agreement

  • Third Grade School Supply list for Room 9 (revised for distance learning)

  1. ONLINE VERIFICATION MEETING on Monday, Aug. 24th from 1:00-2:00 pm (student attendance optional) Zoom Meeting  Meeting ID: 771 2141 1183 Passcode: 4xmE7S

  • The purpose of this meeting is to check and verify your child’s device and ability to log on to participate in distance learning instruction, and outline the 1st day of school.

  • If there are any technical issues or I don’t hear from your child on this day, we can help work those out prior to the start of our first day of school

  • This will also serve as a quick opportunity to say hello and have some face time with one another.

  • Please note,  I will not be answering parent questions or going over my schedule or any expectations on Monday, August 24.

  1. STUDENT MATERIAL PICK UP on Tuesday, August 25th @ Room 9

  • Please see MSJE school communication for details and protocol regarding pick up (single parent pick up, masks required, no students please)

  • Students will be excited to receive their materials, but I ask that you do not permit your child to start working in his/her books until instruction begins. Additionally, please discourage your child from working ahead in their books.  Our curriculum (especially math) focuses on learning or mastering concepts rather than simply arriving at an answer. Without instruction and using different algorithms than what we will be practicing in our live instruction defeats that goal.

You can email me at and I will do my best to respond within 24 hours.

I am excited to partner with you in your child’s education. I am always open to scheduling a call  with you regarding concerns or questions you may have about your child’s progress. Once school starts, my office hours will be held from 12:35 pm-1:20 pm. During these times, you can expect a response within 10-15 minutes. Longer conversations will need to be scheduled for another time outside school hours. I feel that communication between parents, students, and teacher, are essential to a student’s success in school.

To start off the year, I like to ask parents to fill out a form regarding any information you feel is pertinent for me to know about your child. I encourage you and your child to fill out this form together! This will help me get to know your child. Please go to:

I am looking forward to meeting with all of you online at Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 15th when I will be able to share about our third grade goals and policies in more detail!
