Meet Your New Principal - Katy Carter - Mission San Jose Elementary

CarterHow long have you been with FUSD? - 21 years

How long have you worked in education? - 21 years

What is your background? - My teaching career began at Thornton Junior High School, where I taught 7th and 8th grade Science. During my Thunderbolt years, I mentored teachers, served on the Instructional Leadership Team, and collaborated with many amazing colleagues. In 2015, I joined the FUSD Curriculum & Instruction team as an Instructional Coach and focused on NGSS implementation. Most recently, I served as Assistant Principal at Warm Springs Elementary School. There, what could have just been a stepping stone became an extraordinary collaborative experience which has left me prepared to begin my Principalship at Mission San Jose Elementary School.

What will you bring to your school? -I will bring open-mindedness, fairness, consistency, and collaboration together with my love for learning and leadership.

What is your educational philosophy? - I believe education should focus on the development of the whole child. School is not only a place for students to grow academically. Physical, social-emotional, and linguistic growth and learning remains essential for students to thrive and to become prepared for our ever-changing world. To this end, all students must be provided opportunities to collaborate, communicate, and solve real world problems. Ultimately, I believe that the rich diversity within our community is our greatest asset and together we will all achieve greatness.

What can students/families expect this year? – This will be a year like no other. The opening of school under a distance learning model will certainly bring every one of us unprecedented challenges and exciting new opportunities to grow. All students and families should expect to receive comprehensive support from a unified and caring MSJE staff. Students will receive rigorous and relevant online academic instruction, and as a school we will continue to provide appropriate opportunities for social-emotional learning and character education.

Anything else you’d like the school community to know about you? - As a Mission San Jose High School graduate, I have spent most of my life living and working in Fremont. I am proud to be part of our thriving community, and I seek opportunities to stay connected to the rich and diverse tapestry that Fremont is known for. As a parent of school-aged children, I stay very connected with local trends, activities, and social matters affecting our youth. I am thrilled for this opportunity to join the thriving MSJE community; both virtually and in the real world, I am eager and enthusiastic to partner with MSJE staff, students, and families. Go Mustangs!
